Slack channel names, explained
What are the rules for a Slack channel name?+
A Slack channel name must be lowercase, contain no spaces or periods, and use only letters (a to z), numbers (0 to 9), hyphens and underscores. It can be at most 80 characters long. This tool applies every one of those rules for you and shows which ones it had to fix.
How does the formatter clean my text?+
It lowercases everything, then replaces each run of disallowed characters (spaces, periods, punctuation, symbols) with a single hyphen, strips any hyphens left at the start or end, and finally caps the result at 80 characters. So "Q3 Planning & Notes!" becomes "q3-planning-notes".
Why are spaces and capital letters not allowed?+
Slack channel names double as identifiers used in links and mentions, so they need to be predictable and URL-safe. Uppercase letters and spaces are not allowed, which is why the formatter lowercases text and converts spaces to hyphens automatically.
Can a channel name use underscores?+
Yes. Underscores are allowed anywhere in a Slack channel name, alongside hyphens, so the formatter keeps any underscores you type. Only disallowed characters such as spaces, periods and symbols are converted to hyphens.
Is this tool free?+
Yes. It is completely free with no login or account, and it runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded anywhere. The name updates live as you type.
