FAQ

Unix time, explained

What is a Unix timestamp / epoch time?+

A Unix timestamp (also called epoch time) is the number of seconds that have elapsed since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, not counting leap seconds. It is a compact, timezone-independent way to store an exact moment in time.

Seconds vs milliseconds: how do I tell them apart?+

Both count from the same 1970 epoch, but milliseconds are 1000× larger. A present-day value with 10 digits is in seconds, while a 13-digit value is in milliseconds. This tool auto-detects by digit count, and you can override the unit with the Seconds / Milliseconds toggle.

How do I convert a date to a timestamp?+

Use the "Date to Timestamp" section: pick a date and time, choose the timezone it should be interpreted in, and the tool instantly shows the matching Unix timestamp in seconds and milliseconds, plus the ISO 8601 string.

What is ISO 8601?+

ISO 8601 is an international standard for writing dates and times, such as 2026-07-04T13:45:00.000Z. The trailing Z means the time is in UTC. It sorts correctly as text and is widely used in APIs, logs, and databases.

Is this converter free?+

Yes. It is completely free with no login or account required, and every conversion runs entirely in your browser, so nothing is sent to a server.
